With the support of public and private sector leaders, the BDB positions the region as a future hub for quantum innovation
Palm Beach County, FL โ April 14, 2025 โ As the global community celebrates World Quantum Day, Palm Beach County is charting a course to lead in what many are calling the next industrial revolution. Quantum technologiesโfrom ultra-secure communications to advanced computing and breakthrough sensorsโare expected to transform nearly every major industry. The Business Development Board (BDB) of Palm Beach County is helping ensure that this community is not only prepared, but positioned to lead.
โQuantum technologies will redefine how we live and work,โ said Kelly Smallridge, President and CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. โThatโs why weโre taking an active role in bringing together educators, industry leaders, and local government to build a thriving quantum economy right here in Palm Beach County.โ
The BDBโs recent efforts highlight the regionโs commitment to being on the leading edge of this transformation:
- Policy Leadership: In late 2024, Palm Beach County was the site of a high-level policy forum that brought together national quantum experts and local policymakers. The discussion focused on regulatory readiness, infrastructure investment, and how public-private partnerships can accelerate the responsible growth of the quantum industry in the region. (read more)
- Business Community Engagement: Last month, the BDB hosted a special event where over 150 business leaders from across Palm Beach County were guided through an in-depth discussion on quantum technologies and their real-world applications. The session aimed to demystify the field and highlight how local industries can prepare forโand benefit fromโthis emerging wave of innovation. (read more)
- Higher Education Engagement: Last month, the BDB convened presidents from regional universities and colleges to begin aligning curriculum and research programs with the growing demand for quantum science and engineering talent.
- Municipal Readiness: Last week, on April 11, West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James led a meeting focusing on how local government can prepare for emerging technologies. The conversation addressed quantum networking infrastructure and the importance of securing access to advanced computing resourcesโsuch as hybrid systems that combine AI, HPC, and quantum.
- Healthcare Integration: On April 15, the BDB will host a private roundtable with healthcare executives from across the county to explore the impact quantum technologies will have on diagnostics, personalized medicine, and operational efficiency.
Private sector leaders are also taking action. Among them is Matt Cimaglia, Founder & Managing Partner of Quantum Coast Capital, a Palm Beach-based investment firm focused on the quantum industry. โQuantum is no longer an abstract futureโitโs a present-day opportunity,โ said Cimaglia. โPalm Beach County has the vision and momentum to become a global anchor for quantum innovation.โ
Quantum technology refers to a new class of tools and systems that harness the laws of quantum physicsโnatureโs most fundamental rulesโto solve problems that are currently beyond the reach of todayโs computers. These breakthroughs have the potential to dramatically improve cybersecurity, accelerate drug discovery, optimize complex logistics, and enable powerful new forms of artificial intelligence. As the technology matures, communities that invest in research, education, and infrastructure now will be best positioned to lead in the decades to come.
As the world begins to understand the power and potential of quantum science, Palm Beach County is distinguishing itself as a forward-thinking community with the resources, leadership, and collaborative spirit to thrive in this new era.
