A high-tech facility in Palm Beach Gardens has been a showcase for top stars in golf in weekly broadcasts on ESPN with the inaugural season of Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL).
The virtual golf league is owned by TMRW Sports, which is backed by golf stars Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. All matches are planned within the 250,000-square-foot SoFi Center on the Palm Beach Gardens campus of Palm Beach State College.
TGL features three-on-three competitions between professional golfers in front of a live audience of about 1,500 fans. While traditional golf courses encourage fans to keep quiet while players are swinging, the TGL has a party atmosphere with music and cheering.
The players start each hole by firing shots onto a screen with a virtual court. The screen measures 64 feet tall by 53 feet wide and cameras track the trajectory of the balls. Once a player’s ball lands on the green surrounding the hole, play shifts to a 3,800-square-foot rotating turntable that changes elevation to create for more challenging puts.
Each match lasts about two hours, which is much faster than a typical PGA Tour event.
There are also fan activities, including life-sized holograms of players to take photos with and a putting green.
TGL matches are currently scheduled through the finals on March 25.
